HBO Fires Back At Michael Jackson Estate, Wants $100M Lawsuit Dropped

Source: WENN / WENN

The estate of Michael Jackson no doubt knew that going after HBO for airing the controversial documentary Leaving Neverland wouldn’t go off without a tough legal fight. The cable giant is firing back in the case, demanding that the lawsuit brought by the state be dismissed.

The Blast reports:

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, HBO is not holding back in court against Jackson’s estate. They are continuing to demand the estate’s legal action against them over “Leaving Neverland” be dismissed.

They explain the entire case was brought, “Less than two weeks before Leaving Neverland was scheduled to premiere on HBO, Optimum Productions, John Branca, and John McClain (collectively, “Plaintiffs”) very publicly filed a Petition to Compel Arbitration that aggressively attacks HBO for exercising its free speech rights when it chose to exhibit the documentary, seeks to compel an unavailable ‘public’ arbitration over an expired contract, and asserts they are entitled to more than $100 million in damages— including punitive damages—allegedly arising from statements made in the film about Michael Jackson.”

HBO takes the estate to task saying, “ The only possible reason why Plaintiffs filed their Petition in court was to attract maximum attention to their public relations campaign against Leaving Neverland and the documentary’s subjects, two men who recount in the film in extraordinary detail how, as boys, they were serially sexually abused by Mr. Jackson”

The continue, “But neither the Estate of Michael Jackson nor anyone else owns history, especially history involving a world-famous and controversial public figure. Leaving Neverland’s filmmakers were fully within their rights to tell Mr. Robson’s and Mr. Safechuck’s important stories, and HBO was fully within its rights to exhibit the newsworthy documentary.”

The outlet adds that the estate is arguing that the 1992 non-disparagement clause agreed upon between Jackson and HBO should stand and that the Leaving Neverland documentary’s presents a slanderous angle that violates the agreement. HBO believes that the contract is expired and thus they were within full rights to tell Wade Robson’s and James Safechuck’s story.

Hate him or love him, 2019 is Lil Nas X’s year. He has landed one of the most coveted covers in popular culture.

The Atlanta native is the face of the August 26, 2019 edition of Time Magazine. This is noteworthy for a new recording artist considering that the periodical has historically featured political figures, world leaders and global persons of interest. Photographed by Kelia Anne, he is sporting an all red suit with matching cowboy hat. The background also mirrors his clothing making it a monochromatic piece.

Written by Andrew R. Chow, the story details X’s rise to fame via “Old Town Road” which took him from being a virtual unknown to Rap’s hottest new star. The single also broke the record for being the longest running No. 1 song in history knocking off Mariah Carey’s and Boyz II Men’s 1995 smash “One Sweet Day”. In the interview the 20-year-old discusses his rise to fame and eventually coming out as a gay man.

Boosie Badazz Faces 2 Felony Charges Connected To April Drug Bust

Source: Johnny Louis/WENN.com / WENN

Boosie Badazz was arrested back in April and charged with possession of marijuana and a traffic violation but avoided a gun possession charge. However, Boosie is now facing a year in jail after Georgia prosecutors slapped the Louisiana rapper with two felony charges related to the case.

TMZ
reports:

The D.A. in Coweta County slapped the Louisiana rapper with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, and possession of a controlled substance. When you see it’s less than an ounce of weed, ya might think it’s not that serious, but Georgia ain’t Colorado or California — it still takes marijuana very seriously.

As we reported, Boosie was arrested back in April when cops pulled him over in his white Dodge Charger for swerving lanes and nearly hitting another vehicle. During the traffic stop, officers found the ganja, one handgun and more than $20,000 in cash.

As the outlet notes, another passenger in the car with Boosie is facing the same charges.

JAY-Z Rumored to Become Part-Owner of NFL Team, Eric Reid Responds

Amid the backlash of the announcement of his partnership with the NFL, JAY-Z is now reportedly on his way to becoming part-owner of an NFL franchise.

TMZ details How will have “significant ownership interest” in an NFL  team, however, there was no name mentioned when it comes to a franchise name. In addition, the report states Hov is aiming “to be a change agent for the NFL.” The deal is stated to happen soon.

Earlier this week, Jay sat with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for an announcement of a partnership with Roc Nation and the NFL for entertainment purposes on the field but also social justice reasons. During the press conference, Hov addressed questions about Colin Kaepernick.

I’m not his boss,” JAY said when asked having Kaep assist the deal. “I can’t just bring him into something. That’s for him to say.”

Outside of the press conference, JAY-Z was criticized online for saying “we’re passed kneeling” and it was time for action. He also would make it known he is not reducing the purpose and impact of the kneeling act by the quarterback.

“To be clear, for the room, I’m not minimizing that part of it cause that has to happen. That’s a necessary part of the process. Now that we all know what’s going on what are we going to do? How are we going to stop – cause the kneeling was not about a job it was about injustice. Let me bring attention to injustice. Everyone saying, ‘how are you going forward if Kaep doesn’t have a job?’ This wasn’t about having a job.”

In response to the news of ownership, Eric Reid, who was apart of the same lawsuit against the NFL, but has found a team with the Carolina Panthers spoke after training camp.

“JAY-Z claimed to be a supporter of Colin,” Reid said. “Wore his jersey. Told people not perform at the super bowl because of the treatment that the NFL did to Colin and now he’s going to be a part-owner. It’s kind of despicable.”

Is a Lizzo, Justin Timberlake and Meek Mill Collaboration Coming?

Earlier today we caught a glimpse of Justin Timberlake and Lizzo dancing to a song in the studio.

The “Truth Hurts” songstress posted a video on her Instagram story saying that she did some “Hip-Hop ish” with JT. The “Suit & Tie” artist has given us some classic jams throughout his career. Most of these hits have had Hip-Hop influences, but would be considered an R&B or Pop record.

There was a prominent rapper in the room, playing a very incognito like role at the time of the recording. Meek Mill was spotted in the back. While Meek was only blowing his nose, his presence on the potential record is a strong possibility. The “Championships” rapper doesn’t seem like the type of crash a studio session unless he was making a potential hit.

The video only shows a snippet of the song. The song in the video could not have been what they were working on. The only conclusions that can be made are from the faces we see in the studio. She has collaborated with legends like Missy Elliot on her latest album Cuz I Love You. Therefore, it is no surprise to a possible collab with JT.

Be sure to catch Lizzo at the 2019 Video Music Awards. The performance is set to be nothing short of extraordinary. After an amazing performance debut at the 2019 BET Awards, Lizzo has set herself up to be THE trending topic after her VMAs debut. The 2019 VMAs will take place on Monday, August 23rd at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

SOURCE SPORTS: Josh Gordon Reinstated by the NFL for Upcoming Season

Josh Gordon will give it another go and is set to return to the NFL for the 2019 season.

Friday, the NFL announced the reinstatement of the New England Patriots wide receiver after a December 2018 indefinite suspension. He will rejoin the Patriots for training camp but will not be available for their August 22 preseason game.

Prior to the return of Gordon, the Patriots were believed to be weak at the wide receiver position and ESPN reports one of the best options for Tom Brady was an undrafted player from a Division II school.

“We are all rooting for Josh to succeed, both personally and professionally,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Everyone shares in that hope and will continue to support him to every extent possible. But as Josh acknowledged, ultimately his success is up to him.”

Gordon filed for his reinstatement in April and will play under a one-year, $2 million contract.

Blu & Damu the Fudgemunk – Ground & Water (EP Review)

Blu is a underground titan from Los Angeles, California that rose to prominence with the seminal 20017 album Below the Heavens: In Hell Happy with Your New Imaginary Friend. The man would go on to release a slew of projects with different producers since from a duology EP series with Nottz to his latest album with Oh No & now he’s adding onto that as Redefinition Records founder Damu the Fudgemunk is producing his 5th EP right here.

The opener “Both of Them” starts off with some old fashioned turntablism, but then Blu comes in to reclaim his prowess out comes in during the last minute or so. The next song “Feet on the Ground” is a party cut with a funky boom bap beat while the track “Beast Mode” is an average posse cut with an orchestral boom bap beat.

The song “Share the Love” with Raw Poetic finds the 2 talking about the industry over a somber boom bap beat & after the jazzy “Get on Down” interlude, the title track pays tribute to his hometown over a sample of Leon Haywood’s “I Want’a Do Something Freaky to You”. The song “Rhymes & Gemstones” gets insightful over an Indian sample & then the EP finishes with “Grey Heaven”, where Blu gets spiritual over some a beat with some shaking bells.

This was a pleasant surprise to me. Blu continues to show how much of a sharp lyricist he is & Damu maintains to be one of the best producers that the underground has seen all decade.

Score: 8/10
