Nipsey Hussle Wins 1st Grammy Award, Family Accepts Honor On His Behalf

The Marathon Continues. Nipsey’s absence from the world after being tragically gunned down on March 31, 2019, is still being felt, but he got some roses by earning his first Grammy Award last night (Jan.27).

The posthumous award win came during a pre-televised segment of the 62nd Grammy Awards. Nipsey took home the Grammy for best rap performance for his track “Racks In The Middle” featuring Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy. The late rapper’s family accepted the award on his behalf, with an emotional speech from his grandmother.

“I wanted to thank all of you for showing all the love that I have felt for him all of his life and will always live in my heart. So thank you, thank you, thank you.”

The award came before the tribute performance that premiered a new song from Meek Mill, “Letter To Nipsey,” which also features Roddy Rich. It then transitioned into DJ Khaled’s John Legend, Nipsey Hussle assisted track “Higher,” which also won a Grammy for best rap/sung performance. Nipsey’s good friend YG and Kirk Franklin also contributed to the tribute that also showed love to Kobe Bryant as well.

“Racks In The Middle” was also nominated for best rap song but lost to 21 Savage and J. Cole’s “A Lot.” Nipsey Hussle earned his first Grammy nod back in 2018 for his critically acclaimed and now platinum album Victory Lap.

Russell Simmons Accusers Premiere Doc at Sundance Film Festival

Oprah Winfrey may have withdrawn from executive producing the documentary regarding the allegations against former Def Jam mogul Russell Simmons, but the film did debut at the Sundance Film Festival as scheduled to a standing ovation.

On Saturday (Jan. 25) the documentary, On the Record, was premiered but not before causing a stir. According to the New York Times, creators set the tone for the film by placing a truck outside of the venue where the film was screened with a sign that read “Hold Sexual Abusers Accountable.”

After the screening, the film’s central figure, Drew Dixon, along with two other women from the documentary, Sil Lai Abrams and Sherri Hines, went onstage to a standing ovation and took part in a Q&A along with the directors. The audience — which included the Netflix chairman and chief executive Reed Hastings, the CNN chief Jeff Zucker and the actresses Rosanna Arquette and Frances Fisher — was mostly silent during the screening; but after Dixon appeared on stage noting that the film serves as a wake up call to the plight of Black women in regards to sexual assault, the crowd erupted.

“It’s time to take the plunder of black women seriously,” Dixon said.

The documentary follows Dixon as she weighs whether to take her sexual abuse claims public. Dixon, a 48-year-old former music executive, claims that Simmons raped her in 1995 when she was working for him as a young executive. Simmons has denied all accusations of nonconsensual sex.

On the Record” also delves into the place black women have in the #MeToo movement and the racial dimensions of sexual assault by discussing the culture at the time: misogyny in the music business, both in specifics when it came to hip-hop, and in general terms, pointing out that the rap genre didn’t invent the use of degrading images of women in its music videos.

#MeToo founder Tarana Burke is also a frequent voice, adding commentary about black women’s place in the movement, and their feelings of alienation. “Black women feel like they have to support black men,” she said. One audience member noted that the film, despite being about black women accusing a black man of rape, is directed by two white people.

“A lot of this is about power and ecosystems of power,” Dixon said after the screening. “And all of us have kept our stories to ourselves for decades, and there are people within that ecosystem who knew our stories.”

In addition to premiering at Sundance, the documentary also featured new music from Lauryn Hill. “Damnable Heresies” plays in full over the closing credits to the Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering-directed film.

“This previously unreleased track was specifically chosen by Ms. Hill to appear in the film,” a spokesperson for On the Record told EW, noting that Ms. Lauryn Hill also wrote the song.

While producers are still looking for distribution for the film it has been added to the Park City Utah Film festival and is scheduled to be screened there on Tuesday (Jan. 28) and Feb. 1.

Kanye West, Chance The Rapper and Kirk Franklin Honor Kobe Bryant During Sunday Service

Like most of us, we wished to have woken up from Sunday’s nightmare of, Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna’s tragic death. Bryant, 41 and Gianna, 13 were traveling to a basketball game at his Mamba Academy facility with 7 other passengers when his private helicopter lost control, ultimately crashing to the ground in Calabasas, CA Sunday morning. The devastating news instantly shook the world.

Kanye West took to his Midnight Sunday Service to pay tribute to the fallen icon, along with Chance The Rapper and Kirk Franklin.

West was more than a fan of Kobe’s greatness and it showed.

On “Swagger Like Us,” Ye raps:

“How it feels to wake up and be the sh*t and the urine? Trying to get that Kobe number, one over Jordan”

On Beyonce’s “Ego Remix,” Kanye raps:

“I had dreams of the league one day I play Kobe, or walk up to Puff and he’ll really know me.”

On April 13, 2016, Kobe Bryant played his final game as a Los Angeles Laker and professional basketball player. On the court, Bryant coined the term “Mamba Mentality,” after his nickname “The Black Mamba.” The sold-out Staples Center crowd, packed with celebrities, stars from all walks out of life and fans gathered to watch this global icon play his final 60 minutes of basketball. Kobe Bryant would put on a show to finish with a 60 point performance. Kanye West was in attendance. On that day, West wore a shirt dedicated to Mamba. “I Feel Like Kobe” after his “I Feel Like Pablo” merch.

Of their classic project Fantastic. The revamp titled Fantastic 2020 Vol 1 & Vol 2 is supported by a European tour that kicks off early February.  In homage to original members T3, Baatin, and J Dilla the 18 piece Abstract Orchestra revamped classic J Dilla productions. 50 Cent Checks MSNBC’s Alison Morris Over Her Alleged “Nakers” N-Word Slip

MSNBC reporter Alison Morris was like many an on-air journalist scrambling to cover the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, leading to a slip-up that sounded to most like the n-word. 50 Cent caught wind of the alleged gaffe and has demanded that Morris be fired from her post.

The artist born Curtis Jackson didn’t spend a lot of time blasting Morris, who has been revealed to be a native New Yorker hence she clearly has heard the term New York Knicks in her lifetime.

Although she claimed before the segment that she doesn’t follow basketball, her jumbling of the Los Angeles Lakers, which sounded a lot like “Los Angeles N*ggers,” caught the attention of many. We’ve listened to the clip several times oursleves and we’re not hearing much, if not nothing at all, that sounds like “Los Angeles Nakers.”

“[D]id this b*tch just say that on air,” Fif questioned, later adding that Morris should be fired. Morris claims she was saying the word “Nakers,” mixing up the Knicks and Lakers’ team names but it’s hard to see how it computes. As of now, MSNBC hasn’t addressed the matter publicly but many are hoping a better explanation comes sooner than later. Until that happens, color Hip-Hop Wired and many of our peers and associates skeptical.

Google Proves Black Culture is the Blueprint for Pop Culture in ‘Most Searched’ Ad

The Grammys got dragged once again for their lack of diversity at the 2020 award ceremony. To add insult to injury, the Recording Academy’s CEO, Deborah Dugan, filed an explosive complaint against them claiming the voting process was rigged, citing gender and racial discrimination.

Of course, they weren’t going to actually fix the voting process in time for Sunday, so they had to put a band-aid on it.

Google premiered its “most searched” ad in honor of Black History Month during the biggest night in music. “There are moments in American history that captivate us all,” the ad kicks off.

Parallel to its annual Year in Search, the ad recaps the most searched moments in Black history. Beyonce’s historic Coachella performance was the most searched performance. Maya Angelou is the most searched female poet, and Serena Williams is the most searched tennis player.

The ad was made based on the most searched iconic moments between January 1, 2004 and July 1, 2019. “In other words, being the most searched talk show host means Oprah Winfrey was searched more than all other talk show hosts over this 15-year span,” as per Google.

This ad also supports Google’s plans to support NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) with a $3 million grant.

Lizzo Takes Home 3 Trophies At 2020 Grammy Awards

The 2020 Grammy Awards appeared on paper to be a major haul in hardware for Lizzo, who has earned her way into the hearts of many with her feel-good music. The Cuz I Love You superstar took home three trophies for her contributions, and many other stars in the making made a fine showing as well.

Lizzo took home two awards prior to the broadcast with the Best Urban Contemporary Album for Cuz I Love You, and Best Traditional R&B Performance for her “Jerome” track.

As we shared earlier, Tyler, The Creator took home Best Rap Album for IGOR, although, like Lizzo, the project itself defies simple genre labeling which the one-time Odd Future mouthpiece stated in a backstage presser.

The night belonged to 18-year-old Billie Eilish, who swept all the major awards with the Record of the Year trophy for “Bad Guy, the Album of the Year award for her When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? release, the Song of the Year award for “Bady Guy,” and was named Best New Artist.”

Lil Nas X took home two awards, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for his smash hit remix of “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus, and Best Music Video for the same track.

Beyoncé’s Homecoming took home the Best Music Film award the and Best Rap Performance award went to the late Nipsey Hussle for his track “Racks In The Middle” with Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy. 21 Savage’s J.Cole-assisted “A Lot” won Best Rap Song, and DJ Khaled won the Best Rap Performance award for the track “Higher” featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend.
